If you love the delicate flavors of shrimp and the satisfying texture of rice rolls but don’t have time to whip with the traditional rice roll batter, then steamed shrimp rice rolls made with rice paper are your new best friend! These rolls are light yet filling—perfect as a snack, appetizer, or even a light meal.

Rice paper, typically used for fresh spring rolls, makes an excellent substitute for traditional rice wrappers because it’s easy to work with and requires very little preparation. No batter mixing or rice roll techniques needed! Just soak the rice paper in warm water for a few seconds, and you’re ready to go. The beauty of this method is how versatile it is—depending on what you’ve got in your fridge or pantry, you can easily customize your rolls with different proteins like chicken, beef, eggs, etc. The result? A quick, healthy, and satisfying treat that’s ready in no time.

As the rice paper steams, it softens, allowing all the bouncy shrimp to meld with the rice paper. The final product is a roll that’s slightly chewy on the outside, with a delightful perfectly steamed shrimp inside.

For the dipping sauce, we’re keeping it simple but irresistible. A combination of sweet soy sauce, sesame sauce, and a heaping scoop of chili oil. The sauce is so easy to whip up that you might just want to double the recipe to keep it on hand for all your future rice roll cravings. It’s the perfect complement to the shrimp rolls, adding that extra punch of flavor that brings the whole dish together.

So if you’re short on time but still craving a delicious, satisfying snack, these steamed shrimp rice rolls with rice paper are the way to go. Light, but packed with flavor, they’re a great alternative to the traditional method—and they come together in no time! Whether you’re hosting a party, enjoying a quick weeknight dinner, or simply looking for a healthy bite, these rolls are sure to impress with minimal effort. Ready, set, roll!

  • 12 12 shrimps

  • 3 tbsp 3 green onions

  • 3 tbsp 3 cilantro

  • 2 tbsp 2 chili oil crisp

  • 1 tbsp 1 sesame sauce

  • Sweet Soy Sauce
  • 2 tbsp 2 soy sauce

  • 2 tsp 2 dark soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup 1/3 water

  • 5 tsp 5 sugar

  • 1 tsp 1 oyster sauce

  • 1 tsp 1 sesame oil

Directions

  • Run each rice paper under water and lay 3 peeled and deveined shrimps in the middle of the damp rice paper. Sprinkle in green onions and cilantro. Fold the top over and both sides of the rice paper. Roll it up into a flat long shape. Brush the surface of a plate with oil and place the rolls on top. Brush the rolls with oil as well to prevent sticking.
  • Fill a pot with water and place a steamer stand inside. Placed the shrimp roll plate inside and steam for 5 minutes until the shrimps are cooked and rice paper is tender enough.
  • In a pan, mix soy sauce, dark soy sauce, water, sugar, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Reduce on low heat for about 2 minutes and drizzle over the rice rolls.
  • Drizzle sesame sauce and chili oil over the rice rolls.
  • Enjoy!
