Get ready to meet the next level of musubi greatness! If you’ve ever had the classic Spam musubi—a delicious, salty slice of Spam perched on a bed of perfectly seasoned rice, wrapped in a sheet of nori—then brace yourself, because this crispy Spam katsu musubi is about to take things up a notch! Imagine the same satisfying combination, but with a crispy, golden-brown twist. We’re talking about Spam, but not just any Spam—Spam that’s been coated in crunchy panko and deep-fried to perfection. It’s like your favorite katsu meets the beloved Spam musubi, and they just decided to have a flavor party!

The magic happens when the Spam is transformed into something extra crispy on the outside, while still tender and juicy on the inside. Each bite gives you that satisfying crunch, followed by the salty, savory goodness that Spam is famous for. The real kicker? A drizzle of rich, tangy katsu sauce, adding just the right amount of sweet and savory to the mix. It’s the perfect contrast to the fluffy rice and the slightly briny nori. Trust me, once you’ve tried this, there’s no going back to plain old Spam musubi!

If you’re a fan of Spam musubi but crave a bit more texture and crunch, this is the recipe for you. Frying the Spam in panko creates a crispy crust that locks in all the deliciousness inside. Ingredients

  • 1 1 can of Spam

  • 2 2 eggs

  • 1 cup 1 Panko bread crumbs

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 flour

  • 1 tbsp 1 garlic salt

  • 1 tbsp 1 garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 pepper

  • 2 cups 2 cooked white rice

  • seaweed sheets

  • furikake

  • frying oil (vegetable, canola, or peanut)

  • Katsu Sauce
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 water

  • 3 tbsp 3 ketchup

  • 2 tbsp 2 oyster sauce

  • 1 tsp 1 Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp 1 sugar

Directions

  • Slice spam with about 1/3 inch thickness.
  • In three separate bowls, beat the eggs. Split half the seasonings into the flour and panko. Coat the spam in flour, then egg, then panko. Press the panko on with your hands.
  • Deep fry each coated spam slice in oil that is 375F degrees. You can also test if the oil is ready by sticking a wooden chopstick and see if there’s bubbles immediately. Fry the spam until golden and crisp. Double deep fry at a higher temperature to lock in the crisp.
  • In a small sauce pan, mix water, ketchup, oyster sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Simmer until combined and thickened.
  • Cut seaweed sheets in thirds so the sheet is slightly smaller than the spam slice when wrapped. Use a spam mold or the spam can to mold your rice. Add a bit of katsu sauce and sprinkle on furikake. Stack the spam and wrap it tightly. Seal with a piece of rice.
  • Enjoy!
